Access an AOL Email Account With Windows Mail
Getting your AOL mail in the Windows Mail app is really easy. You can make it your only email account on your computer or add it in with your other email accounts, like Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or Outlook Mail.
You might need to know AOL’s IMAP server settings or POP server settings to download email to Windows Mail, as well as the AOL SMTP server settings in order to send mail. These settings will be mentioned below when necessary since newer Windows Mail programs know this information already.
Access an AOL Email Account With Windows Mail
Mail is the name of the default, built-in email program in Windows 10 and Windows 8; it’s dubbed Windows Mail in Windows Vista.Be sure to follow along with the steps that pertain to your specific version of Windows.
WINDOWS 10
Click or tap the Settings button at the bottom left side of Mail.Choose Manage Accounts from the menu that shows on the right side of the program.
Pick the Add account option.
Click/tap Other accounts from the list of options.
Type the AOL email address into the first field and then fill out the rest of the page with your name and the password for the account.
Click or tap the Sign in button.
Choose Done on the screen that says All done!.
You can now use the menu button at the very top left of Mail to switch between your email accounts.
WINDOWS 8
If this is the first time using the Mail app in Windows, skip down to Step 5 since you should be asked which email account you want when the program first opens. However, if you’re already using another email account in Mail and would like to add your AOL account, follow from Step 1.Open the Mail app and enter the WIN+C keyboard combination. In other words, hold down the Windows key and press C to complete this step.
Click or tap Settings from the menu that shows to the right of the screen.
Choose Accounts.
Click/tap Add an account.
Choose AOL from the list.
Type your AOL email address and password in the fields provided.
Click the Connect button to add the AOL email account to the Mail app.
If you don’t see any messages, it’s most likely because you don’t have any recent emails on that account. Mail should give you an option to get older messages, like this: “No messages from the last month. To get older messages, go to Settings.”
Click that link to go to Settings, and then under the “Download email from” section, choose Any time and then click back in your email to close that menu.
WINDOWS VISTA
If you’re adding your AOL email as a second account in Windows Mail (or third, fourth, etc.), follow these steps. Otherwise, skip down to the next section.Navigate to Tools > Accounts… from the main menu.
Click the Add… button.
Make sure E-mail Account is highlighted.
Click Next.
Go to Step 1 in the next section and follow those directions.
If it’s your first time using an email account in Windows Mail on Windows Vista, follow these steps:
Type your name in the space provided when you first open Windows Mail, and then choose the Next button.
Enter your AOL email account on the next page and then press Next again.
Make sure POP3 is chosen from the drop-down menu, and then fill out the corresponding areas with this information:
Incoming mail server: pop.aol.com
Outgoing e-mail server name: smtp.aol.com
Put a check in the box next to Outgoing server requires authentication, and then click Next.
Enter your email username in the first box on the next page (e.g. examplename; don’t type the @aol.com section).
Type your email password in the Password field and choose to remember/save the password.
Click Next to reach the final page, where you can click Finish to exit setup.
Optionally choose Do not download my e-mail at this time if you’d rather wait to have Windows Mail download your AOL emails. You can always start the download later.
Windows Mail will go directly to the Inbox folder of your AOL email account.
