OK – sold a couple of paintings last night and told my wife that some of that will go to a new camera. I’m a Canon guy – suggestions

    Thinking of something like this

Yea I would not go with any of those lenses included in the kit.

That’s the deal I did at costco a few months ago. I would get that and then focus on lenses.

Like Max said, at other dealers they have included the new kit lens (18-55 with Image Stabilizer) in a lot of their kit packages for the XTi.

You also may want to invest in an external hard drive to back up your precious photos. If I haven’t had my externals over the last 4 years I’d be in much trouble and extremely mad for losing data haha.

for the card, make sure to go with one with the fastest data transfer rate.

i personally like to go with bh

here’s a similar kit, but with a lexar compact flash instead of ATP (not sure what brand ATP is)

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/494375-REG/Canon__EOS_Digital_Rebel_XTi.html

alternatively, you can buy the body only with the card

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/494372-REG/Canon_CAEDRXTIBK1_EOS_Digital_Rebel_XTi.html

and get the IS lens seperate

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/519475-USA/Canon_2042B002_EF_S_18_55mm_f_3_5_5_6_IS.html

from what I understand, the IS version of the 18-55 is much much better than the old 18-35

in another month, the XSi is coming out, so I’m not sure if the XTi prices are going to drop. The downside of the XSi is that it doesn’t take compact flash

if you want to check out the 18-55 non-IS, let me know and I’ll bring it on saturday

No worries Max – I’m just throwing a few of these things up to see what you guys say and advice you have. I’ll probably get one this week at Costco

Yea I would go with the IS 18-55 if you are going to get the kit lens. Also to see IQ with the kit lens you can look at my pictures on austingrade.com/cnc

They are all taken with the kit lens (18-55 non IS) The last 2 albums/weeks have been with a lens hood and polarizer.

I don’t claim to know anything more than my own experience… I have an xti, I bought it at Cal’s camera with a kit a while ago and I got $150 off ended up paying just over 700 for the body, an 18-55 and a 70-300 lens.

I use Sandisk IV and I am very happy with it.

I know Cal’s is sometimes more expensive than other places but I think I got a good deal.

if you go into a camera store, you can usually talk them down (especially @ samys)

they work on commision and would rather get the sale than to see you walk out

Cliff – not to annoy you (too much) but the EOS 450D – not sure what the US name will be – XTii/XTi+ is coming out real soon, one of the features it has is ‘live view’ allowing you to shoot without having to look through the viewfinder or guess……

    i think that’s the XSi

I think it’s better in every which way, except (and this is a big except) it only accepts secure digital, not compact flash cards

that pretty much killed my excitement over it

I got it – I guess I should have waited a month more. Waiting more than 3 has been a killer.

I’d rather have the XTi then the XSi, if I were going to get the XSi I would rather get a 40D. For how many, or lack there of, updates on the XSi than there are on the XTi not worth the money IMO.

Grats on getting the camera, can’t wait to see some pictures!
